December 2023

Wojtek Markowski gave us an introduction to the scroll saw and his amazing cut-out work. It seems the club has a large number of closet scroll sawers in our midst! Wojtek has a lot of handouts. If you were unable to get one or want more information, then please contact via the club’s email address.

Another well attended evening with Martin Saban-Smith who turned a small Sycamore bowl and coated the outside with his Hampshire Sheen colours. Martin introduced his new ranges to us which included stencils and a wider range of colours.

A successful Ashtead Rotary Village Day with great interaction with the community and some welcome sales. Informative Club night which included Roger Marsden sharing his woodturning journey, Jeff Cordery with tips for maintaining your lathe, and Jamie Shears on Shou Sugi Ban as an alternative finishing method.

A very informative club demonstration on making salt and pepper grinders by Gordon Eaton, with a focus on the famous crush-grind mechanisms, taking us through all the stages from start to finish. An appeal to members for volunteers.

The club were treated to a great demo from Martin Clarkson, leader of the online Woodturning Zoom Club, who managed to fit in 5 demo items. We were also treated to a visit from Barry Teague who brought along 4 of his Blues Bowl guitars for us to admire.

Scott Grant, aka "The Blue Light Turner", provided a demonstration on an offset bowl with active interactions from the audience. This issue includes an in depth view by Gordon Cookson into the way demonstrations, IRDs, Youtube videos and TV programmes are changing woodturning.
