Greg Moreton shows how to make an Interesting shape and Oyster bowl. Richard Hoodless reports on the evening’s demonstration.
Greg’s first project was a double ended hollow trumpet form. A piece of laburnum log about 3” diameter was drilled right through using a 19mm diameter auger bit. The piece was then placed on a jam chuck of 19mm diameter dowel held in a chuck and the tailstock brought up for support.
Greg emphasised that you should always drill the hole first as this ensures concentricity of the turned piece. A large cove was turned from both ends using a bowl gouge until the centre was about 1” in diameter and making sure the cove was symmetrical.
