admin2021-12-08T13:51:48+00:00During his first visit to Cheam Brian Cockerill gave members an entertaining and very interesting demonstration on turning and finishing a gouge handle to replace an existing handle which has either become damaged or unserviceable. For the demonstration Brian was using a 2”x2” Padauk blank to create a 12” long handle for a 1⁄2” bowl gouge. When turning handles for his own use the final shape is determined to suit his own hand size and grip.

admin2021-12-08T13:53:27+00:00Pat O’Connell started a very varied and enjoyable evening without saying what he was turning! He hinted that maybe it was to be a bowl with a wide, thick rim. A 3/8ths hole was drilled through the bowl between the rim and the bowl shape. Pat usually mounts the top side of the bowl blank on a face plate ring and makes a recess in the base with a 45 degree angle for reverse chucking. He describes himself as a woodturning artist and showed us how to enhance the appearance of wood by the application of colour and design. In 2016 he was awarded the AWGB Approved Tutor badge. This has led to him getting involved with the AWGB youth training program, he ran the first of these courses at his studio in February 2017. The proceedings were observed by Colin Smith the A.W.G.B. South East rep. The box he demonstrated is a competition winner. His web site is well worth a visit, particularly the specialist turning tools that he has designed and developed with Henry Taylor. Jason showed us how he made a lidded box which is effectively a hollow semi-circular tube with two lids and a skirt which can be shaped and decorated in a variety of ways.
